Thank you to all the parents who came out this week and listened to their children share their learning during student led conferences.

1) Circle of Courage Clubs: will be starting the first Friday back after spring break and will be running until May 24th.

2) “No-Waste Wednesday:"The Green Team is working hard to promote reducing our Carbon Footprint by Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. We will be having our first “No-Waste Wednesday” (aka Litter-less lunch) on Wednesday, March 20^th. We encourage kids to bring no prepackaged food to school and to be creative in using only reusable or recyclable containers to pack their snacks and lunch. After this Wednesday, these “No-Waste Wednesdays” will occur once per week for the remainder of the year. We will be weighing the impact of this initiative in Green Team Club by looking at the amount of landfill garbage we are able to reduce for the months of March, April, May and June.

Just a quick friendly reminder that we are still collecting plastic milk jug, water bottle and juice bottle/carton lids to use for our Green Team Club recycled art project. Please continue to send in with your child, in order to ensure that we have enough combined to make a wonderful art piece for our school! We will continue to collect these plastic lids until the week after Spring Break April 5^th,2019.

This week in writing, students wrote their first Arctic story. Their next steps are to understand the different elements (characters, setting, problem, solution, lesson learned, powerful words and magical element) in Arctic stories. We focused on character development this week and will start learning more about setting, writing a strong beginning and developing a problem next week. Ask me about who my characters are going to be and how I will describe their personality by using descriptive words.

In Inquiry students continue to work on their animal research and began putting their the information into a google slide presentation. We also began to work through the scientific method to design a thermos that will keep an ice cube from melting. Ask me about my hypothesis and the type of insulation I am going to use to keep the ice cube from melting.

In math students began a tee shirt investigation which is challenging them to think about place value while applying our double digit addition and subtraction skills.

This week in art we created art work inspired by Ted Harrison. We used several types of mediums to create our art pieces.

 

This week in writing, we continued learning about arctic stories and began to independently identify the characters, setting, problem, solution, lesson learned, powerful words and if there was an element of magic. 

In Inquiry we worked in groups to begin creating Arctic food chains and learned about the animals that are important to the Arctic ecosystem and what might happen if an animal became extinct. Then we selected an animal to research and began to gather information about our animal. Soon we will be taking all of the information to create a google slide

In math we used cubes to practice solving double digit problems. Here are a couple of problems you can try at home with your child.

Gwen has 57 marbles. 43 are big and the rest are small. How many marbles are small?

There were 46 nickels in the jar. 11 of them were taken out. How many nickels are left in the jar?

Mike has 90 ribbons and /hop has 24 ribbons. How many more ribbons does Mike have than Hope?

Today we had Pink shirt day. We participated in an assembly then designed pink shirts to show how we can help stop bulling by showing kindness instead.

In writing, we completed our poems and independent writing samples then posted them to IRIS and created a goal. Please take sometimes to view your child's work and discuss their goal. We are now starting to learn about Arctic stories and the different elements. We will be working towards writing our own arctic story. Here is one of the stories we watched.

In Inquiry we researched 6 topics (Weather, Land/geography, Wildlife/Animals, shelter, Iqaluit, Transportation) about the Arctic. Ask me about the information we learned.

In math we continued to explore double digit addition and subtraction. We learned how to use the cubes tool below to help us work through a word problem. Some of us still need to practice double digit subtraction and check that we are adding and subtracting basic facts accurately.

1) Thermostat Challenge: As part of international Polar Bear day on Feb 27th the grade 2 students have been tasked with taking on the thermostat challenge. Yesterday students brought home a sheet where the can record the temperature to show how they took on the thermostat challenge. Please complete the challenge and then return the thermostat sheet by Friday Mar 8th.

Feb 22

This week we continued to work on writing poetry.  Students chose their favourite poem, edited it, submitted it for peer review, wrote it out for publication in a good copy then self evaluated their work based on the poetry rubric.  

In math we are continuing to work on adding and subtracting double digit numbers.  Extra practice at home to solidify basic addition and subtraction facts to 20 would be beneficial as many errors are being made in computing.  

In Inquiry we discovered that the animal adaptation of increased layers of blubber helps animals stay warm in the arctic and in the ocean.  We also completed our Aurora Borealis sculptures today.  A few are on display in the main office. 

  

1) Pink Shirt Day!: Hello ROS families. On Thursday, February 28th, we will be recognizing Pink Shirt Day. It is a day where we encourage everyone to practice kindness and wear pink to symbolize that we do not tolerate bullying. Throughout the day, students will participate in activities that inspire acceptance, care for others and themselves and will conclude with a school wide assembly. To show support, students are encouraged to wear pink or their blue ROS shirts.

This week we had Alien Inline skating. Ask me about what we worked on. We sure had a lot of fun.

This week in writing we continued our exploration of poetry as we learned how to write a poem using personification and onomatopoeia. We also tired writing a Free Verse poem while thinking about how we could apply what we had learned. Then we use the self-assessment below to think about how we could improve our poem.

In math we learned several math games to practice double digit addition and subtraction. Ask me about my favourite math game. See below pictures of a couple of the math games we learned to play. 

 

 


In Inquiry we started learning about maps and how to identify places on a map. Ask me about the places I located on a map of Canada and what I learned about Iqaluit. Take a look at the link and try out the quizz. As a class we got 100%!
