In writing this week students began working on describing a sibling or friend. They are learning about descriptive words that describe a person personality.

This week in inquiry we have been very busy focusing on learning about the Chinese immigrants story and how they helped build the railway. Ask me about what I learned and how the Chinese contributed to the building of the railway. As part of our investigation into the perspective of the Chinese immigrants we read Ghost Train.

We also had the opportunity to attend the Glenbow Museum on a field trip. We learned how to think about the stories behind artwork and artifacts as well as the stories that may not be told through art work. In the afternoon we began learning about the Arctic and examined artifacts the inuit would use to survive.

This week in math we have been learning several math games. Please take a look at the images below and ask me how to play.

1) Rocks and Rings: Royal Oak School students will have the opportunity to participate in an activity called Egg Farmers Rocks and Rings presented by Curling Canada from November 30th until December 6th, during Physical Education classes. Curling is a fun sport to learn and participate in and aligns well with the Alberta Physical Education Curriculum. The aim of the physical education curriculum is to enable individuals to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. Curling is one of many activities that individuals may participate in for many years.

This program introduces students to the Olympic sport of curling and features a variety of drills, relays and team-building activities. It is taught using unique indoor floor curling equipment that helps to provide a true curling experience without requiring ice. For more information on this program and to check out some cool videos check out their website at www.rocksandrings.com

Thank you to everyone who attended student led conferences. The students had a wonderful time sharing their learning with you and it was a pleasure speaking with you about your child's learning.

In writing this week students have been learning about how to write a topic sentence and create a paragraph using the senses writing they completed about their Flanders Field paintings.

This week in inquiry we where exploring how density affects liquids and conducted an experiment to see what would happen to liquids with more density compared to other liquids. Ask me to describe what we did in the experiment and the conclusion I discovered about liquids and their density.

1) Glenbow Museum volunteers: We are still in need of 3 more volunteers. If you are able to volunteer and have your clearance please let me know. As a parent volunteer, the CBE requires a police clearance; if you do not have this document, we regret that you will not be able to come at this time. If you would like to volunteer in the future, please visit the office with your photo identification and ask for a volunteer clearance form.

2) Please THINK TWICE before going ON THE ICE: Parents, we have had reports of youth in our community venturing out onto the partially frozen pond.  This is, of course, a safety concern as the pond does not typically freeze consistently enough to safely allow people to access the ice.

We are asking that you please have a discussion with your children about Ice Safety and how to determine when an icy surface is a safe place to play.  An excellent resource (with notes and videos) for this discussion can be found through the Canadian Red Cross website at:

Thank you for keeping our students safe as they explore the community this winter,

Royal Oak School

In writing this week students have been writing about their painting of Flander's Field from last week. They are working on using the 5 senses to add descriptive words to their writing.

In math we continued working on problem solving. We tried a new problem where we had to figure out how many candies there where if there where 3 bags of skittles with 4 candies and 2 boxes of smarties with 8 candies. During our class discussion around the problem we reviewed how to identify the important information in a problem and how to use the strategies to prove our answer.

This week we had our last session with our artist in residence. We worked on transparent paper and used sharpie to outline the tall builds we see in downtown. Then we applied paint to help 1-3 buildings/trees/transportation to stand out. Ask me about what building/trees/transportation I decided to keep or parts I decided not to keep and why?

This week in inquiry we researched the different types of jobs people had in the past. In our research we had to identify the who, what, when, where, and why. Ask me about the job I researched and something I learned?

Today we had a beautiful remembrance day celebration where we had the opportunity to reflect on the soldiers who fought for our country and the freedoms we enjoy today. This week we read the book "Bear in War." Ask me about a question I have or a connection I made to the book and where we could find the bear today. We also worked on some landscapes of Flanders Field in the style of impressionism. Ask me about the painting techniques we learned to create our landscapes.

This week in inquiry we have been learning about water. We started an experiment where we had two jars. One jar had water in it with a lid on and the other jar had water in it without a lid on. On day 3 and 5 we made detailed observations and observed what happened to the water. Ask me about what I thought happened to the water. Hint: I should talk about evaporation.

This week in math we continued working on problem solving. We where given a problem where we had to figure out how many candies there where if there where two bags of skittles with 4 candies and 2 boxes of smarties with 6 candies. Ask me about the strategies I tried to solve the problem. Ask me to show you how triangle math works. Hint: It has to use exploding numbers.

This week we also worked with our artist in residence. We have been learning how to use pencil/coloured pencils to add shading and lines to our art work. Ask me to share how our art piece has three layers which shows how the land has changed overtime.

Wow what a fun week. On Wednesday we all participated in a Halloween Parade around the school so that we could see everyone's costumes. Then we chose our favourite costume to write about and describe so that our classmates could guess what costume it was. Next week we will continue to think about how to add more  descriptive word to enhance our writing. This weekend you can think about what words you would use to describe the objects/landscape around you.

This week in inquiry we where preparing for our debate between the four perspective. Everyone took part and voiced their opinion while respectfully disagreeing with an opposing opinion. Some of us had questions for the other side. Ask me about whether my opinion changed and why. Below is the Self- Assessment we used to reflect on our arguments and whether we where respectful during the debate.
In math this week we have started to learn how to solve problems and look for the important information in a problem. We tried out the problem below. Ask me about one of the ways I tried to solve it. You can use the link for some extra practice with place value and odd/even numbers.

1) Remembrance Day: Royal Oak School will be having a Remembrance Day ceremony on November 9th at 10:30 a.m. Families are welcome to attend; please try to arrive a few minutes early to ensure you find a seat.

Holding Remembrance Day ceremonies helps pass on the tradition of remembrance and is an important way to show our gratitude to the Veterans of Canada, those currently serving and their families, for the losses and sacrifices they have suffered. Due to the solemn nature of this ceremony, families are reminded to refrain from clapping after student presentations. Students who participate in Girl Guides (Sparks, Brownies) and Scouts (Beavers, Cubs) are welcome to wear their uniforms to the assembly.

With Remembrance Day quickly approaching, Royal Oak School would like to support our Veterans by collecting non-perishable food items. These items will be collected all week (November 5-9) and will be picked up and delivered to the Calgary Food Bank (Veterans branch). There are specific items that are more needed than others and the Calgary Food Bank has outlined these as wish list items that are greatly appreciated.

Ms. Bennett will be putting together a Remembrance Day slideshow and is inviting school families to send her photographs of family members who are veterans or current members of the Canadian Arm Forces. Please send in all photographs by the deadline of Wednesday November 7th. With the photographs please include the Canadian Arm Forces veteran or current member’s name, the war or peace keeping mission they participated in, if possible, where the photo was taken, and their relationship to you ( for example great grandfather, aunt, uncle etc.). Ms. Bennett’s email address is mebennett@cbe.ab.ca

2) Artist in Residence Volunteers Needed: We are still in need of two volunteers for Wednesday Nov 14th from 9:45-10:45 during our artist in residence session. If you are able to volunteer please let me know. Please ensure that you have your volunteer clearance. Thank you for your continued support.
