This week in writing we continued our exploration of poetry as we learned about the different types of figurative language such as simile and metaphors. We also learned how to write an acrostic and list poem. Ask me about one of the poems I wrote and how I used figurative language? If you want you can even write one of these poems with me.

In math we began to learn about double digit stacking addition using base ten blocks and how to regroup 10. We discovered that regrouping can be a bit tricky but we need to persevere. Below is an image of some questions we tried. Please take sometime to practice with me. You are also welcome to view the video we watched as a class to learn how we are learning about regrouping.

In Inquiry we began to learn about the Arctic. We started by investigating the photo below by and thought about our reaction and wonders. Ask me about how I felt when I saw this and share how you feel when you see this image. We also started exploring Inuit artifacts and making inferences about what we think they are, used for, made out of and any wonders we had. Ask me about the artifacts we have explored so far.

In our literacy groups we have been learning either about non-fiction texts or inferencing. Ask me about how to make an inference. We have been using a variety of texts such as pictures, short films, comics, wordless picture books and books with text. Below is a poster we refer to to help us think about inferencing. We also use the sentence prompts I think, Perhaps, Maybe or I infer. You can practice inferring with me on a daily base while reading or viewing images that you see around you. If you would like you can use the short film below to practice inferencing with your child.

Students have also posted a writing and reading item on IRIS. Take some time to view your child's post and talk about his/her learning.

Thank you to all of the families and students who came out to the Grade 2 Celebration of Learning last night.

This week in writing we began to explore poetry and how we can use it to communicate a purpose/messages through strong words. We discussed how poetry should make the reader feel something, wonder or think of something in a new way. Ask me about how I can read and write like a poet.

In math we continued to explore the number line and discovered that we need to continue working on skip counting beyond 30 starting at different numbers. For example I can practice skip counting by 10 from 62 or counting by 2's from 73. To practice you can refer to the Mathletics assignments which will be open till Monday morning.

1) Food Bank Donations: If you would still like to contribute a minimum $5 dollar donation for a digital copy of the recipe book the students created, please send in your donation by Thursday January 31. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed.

2) Mathletics: This week the students where given an assignment to complete. Students have till Monday to complete the assignment.

Hello Parents and Guardians!

The Royal Oak School Physical Education department is pleased to provide you with the opportunity to join us for an evening of Ice Skating. Please join us on either Tuesday, February 5th or Thursday, February 7th from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the Royal Oak Community outdoor rink. We will have skates and helmets available to borrow from the Skate Shack. There will be music, hot chocolate and coffee. We hope to see you there!

Kid Sport Calgary has generously donated the use of their Skate Shack, which is a trailer full of skates! The skate shack will provide us with child, youth and adult skates as well as helmets. You will need to sign out the equipment with one of our volunteers.  All persons on the ice during this time will be required to wear a helmet and the equipment will be available on a “first come, first served basis.”

All children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.  School staff will not be supervising this event.  If a child is coming with an adult other than their parent/guardian, they would not be able to participate unless they have a written note from their parent/guardian indicating that another parent/guardian will supervise them for this activity.

We are looking for volunteers to help setting up the music, managing the skate shack (handing out and bringing in the equipment).  Also, assistance is needed attending to the hot beverage area. If you are available to volunteer, please email our volunteer coordinator, Niki at ROSvolunteers@gmail.com.

Thank you for supporting the Physical Education program and I hope to see you all soon!

1) Mathletics

Parents,

Your child brought home their log in card for a computer and/or ipad math program called Mathletics.  This online program is fully aligned with the Alberta Math curriculum.  It provides a place for extra practise and extension activities.  Students are welcome to use the program at any time to reinforce their math learning.  At certain times I may assign a specific activity to your child if I feel he/she needs some extra practise in order to master a concept.  If I assign a task it will pop up as soon as your child logs in.  Mathletics Live also lets your child compete again other students in timed math challenges for basic facts.  This is a fun way to practice and eventually commit to memory addition and subtraction facts.  If you have any questions please contact me.

2) Celebration of Learning: You’re Invited! You are invited to the grade 2 students’ Celebration of Learning on January 24th from 6-7. Your child has been working extremely hard to prepare for this Celebration of Learning and is excited to sharing their learning with you. Please make sure to also bring a cash donation of a minimum $5 for a digital copy of the Grade 2’s amazing Search for Delicious Recipe book. Your donation of $5 will go directly to the Calgary Food Bank. You are also welcome to bring a non-perishable food donation.

Upcoming dates:
Jan 23 - Book Truck
Jan 24th - Celebration of Learning

Jan 11

We have had an amazing first week back. The students have been very busy thinking like curators as they prepare museum exhibits for their Celebration of Learning on Jan 24th from 6-7. They can't wait to share their learning with you and we hope all of you will be able to attend.

This week students also finished off their "How build a lego_________" how to writing project and have posted their work on IRIS. Over the weekend take some time to to view their video and try to build their lego model following the instructions they have given.

In math we have been exploring how to use a number line for both addition and subtraction. Below are a couple of the problems we have been trying with a number line. Feel free to change the numbers and have some fun with your child. I have also included a link to the website "Math Salamanders" which has several resources you can use for extra practice in a variety of mathematical topics.
